Boardwalk Bakery: New, Improved, More Expensive
I will defend Disney and their high prices. I will usually defend Disney on some of their crueler tactics. I will honestly be there for Disney as they raise the price year after year after year.
Not anymore. Not this time.
The Boardwalk Bakery is a staple and a big part of Disney’s Boardwalk Resort, the resort area literally attached to Epcot and to an extent the Hollywood Studios. The place opens nice and early to serve breakfast and runs past the Illuminations hour with a variety of baked goods and desserts while offering a minimal lunch menu. Well it went under for a good period of time for refurbishment, to expand the space and potentially expand the options.
After a good period of time the place reopens and being the curious person that I am, decided to give the place a shot. The interior is certainly much larger than before, as more people can fit in the queue line and there’s less of a chance of seeing the line wail out the door. Part of the appeal of the Bakery was seeing the Cast Bakers in the background working on the freshly baked goods. This time, you won’t see as much of the behind-the-scenes work as its been moved backstage and out of view.
The Bakery seemingly has cut down on the baked and dessert options and given a loftier focus on lunch and snack options (Although it could be the different layout). Some of the classics (cheesecake brownie) have returned, but I don’t see the plethora of sweets I was used to seeing. There is a much more expansive (and expensive) lunch menu that ranges from seafood to your typical American foods. I went with the lobster roll and cheesecake brownie, already mildly regretting it because of price. $24 and not including a drink really hurts.
The lobster roll consisted of buttered chive mayo on a warm roll. The roll wound up being nothing special as it wasn’t very warm and didn’t have the chive mayo I was excited for. Instead, the lobster got all the mayo, butter, and chives and it was hunched inside the roll quite well. But it didn’t exactly flow with the bread; instead it felt like just a topping---kind of like how the pepperoni is just a topping on a pizza. The lobster meat was good and plentiful, but it also had the sour taste of the nasty price tag.
Disney, I am no fool. You gave me a smaller cheesecake brownie than the one in the past, and charged me about the same darn price. It was good, it still tastes like sin, but after $24 and eating two items I still felt like I could tackle a full dinner after all this and not feel guilty. None of this was filling, none of this was a true blue sensation. At around just 10 bucks more I could have gotten some Ohanas---a full buffet and all-you-can-eat dessert to boot. The price didn’t justify the feelings associated with the meal.
Bottom Line: The Boardwalk Bakery has great food but require$ deep pocket$ for full enjoyment. Di$ney does have it$ expen$ive moment$ but they can u$ually be justified with $pectacular and $ometime$ unique food. Not thi$ time, I can’t defend them thi$ time. It i$ ju$t a lob$ter roll. It$ just de$$ert. There i$ better food at cheaper and more valuable price$ in Di$ney property.
